Helpful Hints to Protect your Carpet Investments

Preventive Solutions:

  • Get your retailer to quote for new underlay when they install your carpet, particularly on stairs – New underlay will protect your carpet investment, because it will provide better resilience than using the old underlay and add longevity and life to the carpet.
Please do not use the OLD underlay, as it will affect the Life of the Carpet and is not recommended by manufactures and will negate your warranty.
  • Outdoor and Indoor mats are recommended to be placed at the entrance to all outside doors – The placement of outdoor mats will absorb soil and moisture; they will also help reduce soil tracked into your home and reduce soil on your carpet.
  • Most homeowners are aware from experience that their carpet generally wears in specific areas – Such as in front of chairs in the TV room, under computer desks and chairs, and under tables.
The high activity of foot movement in these areas can in some homes accelerate wear.
  • Use small squares from your purchased carpet, under the legs of chairs, tables, and other furniture as this will prevent crushing the pile
For chairs or furniture with castors, or any type of rollers it is recommended that protective heavy-duty office plastic mats be used to prevent excessive wear and damage. Avoid the movement of heavy furniture and furniture with wheels, such as pianos and credenzas.Prevent damage to your carpet by getting professional advice on the newer techniques for moving your furniture without causing damage to your carpet and fittings.
  • If you are a lover of rugs to enhance the ambiance of your home, here are some hints to protect your carpet underneath your valued rugs
Regularly remove your rugs and clean, dry and vacuum outside or in the laundry area. Clean and restore the carpet pile under which your rugs are positioned.Ensure the steam/ dry cleaned carpet and your rugs are completely dried before replacing in position, as some rugs although expensive may have poor wet fastness. This can cause dye transference from the rug onto your carpet after cleaning. Rotating the position of your rugs occasionally, will also help in maintaining a uniform texture and colour to the carpet underneath.
  • As with most home furnishings such as curtains, furnishing fabrics, carpets and rugs; all are subject to varying degrees of fading over time.We strongly recommend that you protect your carpet from continual severe direct sunlight over time, by drawing awnings, curtains, blinds, and having UV protective film on your windows that face the direct sunlight during most of the day.Otherwise, this could negate your warranty.
  • If possible and if it is not too inconvenient, we also suggest periodically moving your furniture to get a more uniform fade in areas exposed to continual severe direct sunlight
  • Important Iinformation: – Some chemical products, if accidentally spilled or sprayed onto your carpet in an attempt to clean your carpet; may affect the colour of your carpet and may cause damage that is not correctable. The most common chemicals are acne lotion and creams, house-hold bleaches, acids, strong bleaches, chlorine from water tracked in from your swimming pool, insecticide sprays, in-door plant foods, furniture polishes, and hair dyes. Please be familiar with the recommendations printed on the chemical product labels, and to which areas these chemicals can be applied. If you apply chemicals not recommended by Access International Distributors Pty Ltd, the risk of damage to your carpet and the liability to correct the damage rests with you.

Protective Vacuuming Schedule

  • We strongly recommend a regular vacuuming schedule of at least 2-3 times per week.In the high traffic areas, we recommend vacuuming 3- 4 times a week with a more vigorous and thorough vacuum, at least 8-9 passes over the area. Carpet acts like a sink for small soil and dust particles, as well as dust mite faeces, which can be removed by regular vacuuming. Therefore, regular vacuuming can be beneficial to people suffering from asthma, especially children. If you follow our recommended protective vacuuming schedule you will ensure the protection of the Limited wear Carpet guarantee, and you will meet Access International Distributors Pty Ltd warranty requirements and conditions.
  • We recommend the use of an upright or barrel vacuum cleaner pictured in this section. To prevent fuzzing of the surface pile, especially when vacuuming loop pile, cut loop pile or Berber carpets, please turn the brush off and change the head settings for your carpet.

Visual restoration – Steam Cleaning

  • Access International Distributors’ carpets have some stain resistant attributes, which help to clean stains and spills more easily.
However, Access International Distributors’ carpets cannot prevent all stains and the carpet will need steam or dry cleaning.
Please refer to the labels on the back of the retailers display samples, for stain properties of the Access International Distributors’ product you are interested in purchasing.
  • All professional and reputable carpet steam cleaners are aware that steam cleaning should be carried out under the details specified in the Australian and New Zealand carpet cleaning and Maintenance standard AS/ NZS3733.
  • We recommend you get your carpet steam cleaned at least every 6 – 12 months from the date of installation, especially in high traffic areas. However, you must steam clean your carpet at least every 12 – 18 months to ensure your warranty remains valid.
  • Please make enquires to ensure the steam or dry-cleaning company you have chosen is compliant with these standards.
  • It is not recommended to use “Do- it-Yourself” techniques of dry cleaning, steam cleaning or shampooing of your carpet.

Access International Distributors’ Stain Removal Recommendations Steps for Stain Removal

If you allow a spot or spillage to cool or dry before attending to it, it may be impossible to remove. Immediate attention is required so that penetration of the stain into the carpets is avoided, particularly hot liquids.

If care is not taken in cleaning up any spot or stains, there is always the possibility of permanent fixing of the stain in the carpet, in addition to loss of colour and some pile distortion.

Step 1 – Do Not Scrub

To protect your carpet investment, immediate action is required.

For larger spills please use wet/dry vacuum. In the case of solid food spills use a blunt spatula or spoon to scoop up the spillage. It is helpful to use white tissues or white linen cloth in a blotting action to absorb smaller liquid spills.

Step 2. – Absorbant Sponge With Cold Water.

Try to work from the edge of the spillage or stain towards the centre, which will minimise the spread of the area of the original stain.

Please be careful of vigorous rubbing if the stain proves to be difficult to remove, this action will change the texture of the carpet in the area of the spill, which may be very difficult to restore and correct.

Step 3. – Dry Press And Clean.

Once the stain is removed, use a clean white cloth and press dry the carpet.

Step 4. – Dry The Carpet.

Use a flat surface weight over fresh white paper; white linen cloth or towels to complete the drying process.

It is recommended that you do not walk on the carpet until you are satisfied that the carpet has fully dried. As there is potential of further staining from foot soil.

STEP 5. If You are Not Satisfied Repeat Steps 1-4.

Continue these steps until the stained area is not visible.

STEP 6. If The Stain is Still Evident, Call a Professional Carpet Cleaner.

Staining verses Soiling.

The difference between staining and soiling can be confusing to most carpet consumers.

Staining is mostly due to spillages of sugar- based drinks, such as coffee and soft drinks. The sugar content in these liquid drinks if not immediately treated as above in Steps 1-6, will leave a tacky and sticky surface residue. This will readily attract and cause the adherence of foot soil that then develops into a stain.

Soiling is mainly due to foot soil, carried into your home by soil adhered to your shoes.
