Carpet Performance Characteristics

Characteristic 1: Colour Variation

Access International Distributors AQCS- 8000-1 quality assurance program helps to minimise colour variations between dye lots and ensure that colour variation is within recognised industry standards. Please note that the colour of your carpet can vary, due to different lighting conditions.

Characteristic 2: Shedding and Fluffing

Your Access International Distributors Carpet will show minimal shedding and fluffing when the pile is yarn with bulk continuous filaments. Whereas other types of carpets will shed loose fibres to varying degrees and for longer periods depending on their construction before settling.

Shedding and fluffing are not manufacturing defects and BCF (Bulk Continuous Filament) or Wool carpets both will shed some fibre left over from the carpet shearing process.

Characteristic 3: Damaged and Missing Tufts

There are a few ways that loops or tufts in you carpet can get damaged, such as contact with sharp objects like your pet’s claws or cigarette burns.

Corrective Solutions:

  • Sewing back missing tufts by hand
  • For severe damage to slightly larger areas it may be necessary to call in a specialist that deals with carpet repairs

Characteristic 4: Sprouting Tufts

In loop pile carpet constructions, it is important never to try and pull a sprouting tuft, as it may result in a run or line in the carpets surface, which will then need repair.

The sprouting tuft characteristic is usually caused by stiletto heels or your pet’s claws being caught in the loop pile and tearing a tuft or tufts.

Please use a pair of sharp scissors to cut the sprouting tuft level with the pile surface.

Characteristic 5: Stair Distortion and Flattening

Although some carpets are rated as suitable for stairs, over time it is possible that carpet on stair nosing and tread areas can show pile distortion and flattening.

We recommend that you purchase extra carpet to use for replacing areas in the future, if required.

Characteristic 6: Matting (Flattening) Tracking

Matting and tracking tend to occur in high traffic areas such as: entrances, stairs and corridors.

Other areas that could be affected is in front of chairs or under tables and desks. Construction of the carpet is an important factor in reducing this effect.

Lighter weight carpets are more likely to exhibit this effect, compared to heavier and denser carpets.

Characteristic 7: Permanent Pile Reversal

Permanent pile reversal, also known as shading or watermarking may develop in cut pile carpets, which can affect the aesthetics of your carpet.

Visually carpet appears lighter and darker in areas, due to a permanent change in the pile direction. This phenomenon is not a manufacturing fault, it is random and largely unexplained, and it will not affect the performance of your carpet. However, this phenomenon may affect your decision to purchase a cut pile plush carpet, so we recommend that you discuss this characteristic with you retailer, before making a decision.

The Carpet Institute of Australia can provide you with further information on permanent pile reversal. Call Free number 1800 188 822

Characteristic 8: Fading

Exposing your carpet to direct sunlight over a period of time will increase the risk of fading. Atmospheric and ozone conditions can also damage your carpet.

This is not a manufacturing fault, as it is random and largely unexplained. Ozone damage in carpet is most prevalent in coastal areas where there is higher UV.

Therefore, we strongly recommend protecting your carpet by limiting the amount of direct sunlight using curtains, blinds or having UV tint on your windows Awnings are the most effective as they cover the entire window.

Characteristic 9: Wrinkling or Rucking

This characteristic generally occurs after the carpet is installed in your home.

Please request that your carpet, be installed by a professional competent carpet installer, using the power stretching equipment as recommended by the industry.

Wrinkling and Rucking may be caused by the following conditions:

  • Not using the recommended installation procedures
  • Low quality and inadequate underlay
  • Laying new carpet over the old underlay or the old carpet
  • Carpet being exposed to excessive humidity
  • Using a non-certified carpet layer

Characteristic 10: Carpet Shift Lines

Shift lines are parallel lines that may appear across the width of the carpet, due to different manufacturing techniques used in carpet construction.

These shift lines are not a manufacturing fault and will have no detrimental effect on your carpet’s performance.

Generally, under normal lighting conditions they are not noticeable. However, some light sources shining on the surface pile of the carpet from different angles, may accentuate the shift lines.

Please consult with your retailer before carpet purchase.

Characteristic 11: Carpet Phasing and Panelling

Random contrasting colours used in the design of loop pile sisal constructions can develop a visual effect known as phasing. When at times the contrasting colours coincide in production. Panelling can occur in loop pile carpets when the shading effects of colour patterning can appear as panels along the length of the carpet.

Generally, these visual characteristics will not be seen in residential installations but may be seen in commercial installations where larger carpeted floor areas are visible.

These effects are not manufacturing faults and are an accepted part of the design. Phasing and Panelling will not affect the performance of the carpet.
